Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Mulliner, Bentley's custom coachbuilding unit, has designed a unique keycase to mark the 100th anniversary of the Bentley brand. It's made of Dark stained Walnut with Piano Black Veneer and includes a flying "B" paperweight, keys, and a booklet featuring never-before-seen 1930s 8 Litre images.

Aesthetics

Bentley is a firm who takes its aesthetics seriously. It shows in the precision position of its quilting, the selection of leather from cattle by-products, the wood that comes from sustainably managed forests and the ingenious patterns that are etched on its levers. As you approach a vehicle like the Continental GT W12, its beautiful sculptural design is highlighted by carefully selected lighting.

The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top vehicle. The rear tonneau of Continental GT, for example included the biggest piece of dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer that was book-matched. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

Bentley is the most sought-after car brand globally due to its distinctive design and quality. The company continues to push the boundaries with the latest technologies and hand-crafted products. This includes the introduction of an electronic tilt-opening rear window sunroof and a handcrafted Apple iPad docking station.

A century after its founding, Bentley - now under sole Volkswagen ownership after years of fighting with BMW it celebrated its centenary in 2019. Prior to the pandemic plan taking center stage, the marque held a series of special events and launches planned to celebrate this historic occasion.

Design

Bentley is known as a luxury car manufacturer that produces extravagant and luxurious vehicles. But even keys stand out. The Bentayga key is crafted from sterling silver and features the large 'B' symbol that lets everyone know you're a Bentley. The key is also embossed with the dates 1919 and 2019 to mark the company’s centenary.

The Mulsanne was revamped and redesigned by Bentley Mulliner to be the ultimate Grand Touring car. The rear seats were designed to give passengers the most comfortable and private experience. They were inspired by the luxury private aircraft. A customized heating, air conditioning and ventilation system was designed to ensure that every passenger has the ideal climate control setting.

Alongside a series of elegantly executed styling revisions, the Mulsanne is powered by twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre W12 engine capable of producing 560bhp and 479lbft of torque. This colossal power is complemented by a brand new suspension system that provides Bentley's hushed, quiet ride.

In celebration of its Centenary, Bentley introduced a unique specification known as the Centenary Specification for cars that were built in 2019. This includes contrast stitching and cross-stitching in Centenary Gold thread throughout the cabin. The Bentley Wings are embroidered with Centenary Gold on the headrests as well as the seats and other parts of the car. This is a great way to celebrate the occasion. The Centenary Specification also includes a bespoke Bentley keycase, adding to the Bentley experience.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne Key features two buttons one of which opens the trunk, and the other that turns on the vehicle. It also has a switch to turn on the parking break. The knob can be used to fold or unfold the mirrors when parking in a tight space. Using this feature can aid in getting in and out of the car more quickly.

Each key takes about two days to make. It is hand cut and shaped, then sewn, sealed and polished to provide the highest-quality finish. It is lightweight and durable and matches the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar to that of the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however, it feels heavier and has a more luxurious feel.

It is also equipped with Secure-A-Key which can help prevent theft of keys with no key. This device is inserted into the remote control fob, and is disabled when the key isn't utilized for a period of a few minutes. It blocks thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which can be used to open and start the vehicle.

Bentley's distinctive style reflects the company's values of excellence in craftsmanship and engineering expertise as well as modern technology. More than 4,000 employees work at the Crewe headquarters, and are responsible for the design, development, and production of Bentley cars. These workers apply skills that have been handed through generations to current automotive technology. This is the hallmark of British manufacturing at its best.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division allows customers to design their own vehicle. Customers sit at a set of images referred to as "mood stations" and pick a set of photos ranging from picturesque vistas to sporting events - that are inspiring to them. As each selection is made, a pattern appears which shows the model and color preferences for the customized Bentley.

The guests receive the keys in a case designed by hand and containing the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. Keys can also be fitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps that illuminate the door's opening path with the owner's name, or emblem as they make their way towards the vehicle.

Bentley claims it takes about 500 man hours to design and put together the typical Mulsanne. The main reason for this lengthy effort is a conscious refusal to take advantage of modern technology. The Crewe factory workers don't use a machine to space perfectly-matched cross stitched leather seats. Instead, they do it by hand. And rather than letting the car's built-in sensors guide it into perpendicular and parallel parking spots the drivers must perform the task by hand.

At the event, Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities using one particular example that was the Mulsanne W.O. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays tribute to the founding father of the brand, William Osler Bentley. The limited-edition cars have 100 of them. a special key that displays a portion of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
